He's Way Too Skinny': John Goodman, 74, Lost 14st After Decades of Alcohol Use and a Major Lifestyle Overhaul

John Goodman has stunned fans with his dramatic weight loss after shedding around 200lb (14st 4lb) over the past two decades.
The 74-year-old actor displayed his slimmer frame while attending the Los Angeles premiere of his new film Digger with his wife, Anna Beth, on September 28. Goodman has previously spoken openly about reaching almost 400lb and the lifestyle changes that helped him gradually lose around half his body weight.
Some social media users have expressed surprise at his transformation, with one recent comment describing him as 'way too skinny'. However, Goodman has repeatedly stressed that his approach was about changing his lifestyle rather than pursuing rapid weight loss.
How Did John Goodman Lose Weight?
Goodman has attributed his transformation to several long-term changes rather than a single diet or exercise programme.
One of the biggest changes came in 2007, when he stopped drinking alcohol after what he described as a 30-year battle with alcoholism. He previously told The Guardian that drinking had become increasingly debilitating and that he needed to stop.
Giving up alcohol can also remove a significant source of calories. Alcohol provides around seven calories per gram, while some alcoholic drinks contain substantial additional calories from sugars and mixers. The NHS notes that a 175ml glass of 12% wine can contain up to 158 calories, while a pint of 5% beer can contain up to 222 calories.
Goodman also worked with health coach Mackie Shilstone, adopted a Mediterranean-style eating pattern, and reduced his sugar intake. His approach included foods such as vegetables, fruit, fish, nuts, and olive oil, while portion control became another important part of his routine.
What Exercise Did He Do?
Rather than relying solely on restrictive eating, Goodman gradually became more physically active.
His routine has included walking, treadmill and elliptical workouts, and boxing. He previously said he aimed to move more and lose weight slowly, while his health coach encouraged him to reach between 10,000 and 12,000 steps a day. In 2023, Goodman also described boxing sessions lasting around an hour to 90 minutes, involving bag work, mitts and footwork.
His comments highlight the importance of consistency. Goodman has previously described losing 60lb or 70lb during short periods before regaining the weight after returning to his old habits. He later adopted a slower approach focused on maintaining lifestyle changes.
Is Losing Weight Slowly Better?
There is no single weight-loss strategy that works for everyone, and Goodman's experience should not be treated as a prescription.
However, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says people who lose weight gradually, at around 1lb to 2lb a week, are more likely to keep it off than those who lose weight more quickly. It also recommends combining healthy eating, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, and stress management as part of a healthy lifestyle.
Goodman's transformation took many years, rather than weeks or months. His story therefore illustrates how substantial changes in body weight can occur through sustained changes in several areas of daily life.
While his appearance has prompted comments about how different he looks today, the actor has consistently framed his weight loss around feeling healthier, staying active, and changing habits that he felt were no longer serving him.
