Magnesium Is TikTok's Hottest Supplement: Why Doctors Say Many People Still Don't Get Enough

Magnesium has exploded across TikTok as the supplement of the moment, with creators crediting it for deeper sleep, calmer nights and lower stress. Google searches for 'magnesium sleep' more than doubled after the Sleepy Girl Mocktail went viral.
Social media mentions of magnesium jumped 87 per cent alongside that surge. Sales appeared to follow the same curve, with supplement sales projected to exceed $1.5 billion in 2024. The numbers point to a genuine shift in shopping habits.
One US supermarket chain reported sales up by more than 50 per cent. It stocked over 30 forms, including magnesium carbonate, bisglycinate, ozonated magnesium and threonate. That range reflects how mainstream the supplement has become.
Why the Surge Is So Big
Advanced Supplements, a supplement manufacturer tracking the trend, names TikTok as the main driver of magnesium's rise in 2026. Sleep and cortisol regulation sit at the centre of that conversation. The platform's influence on wellness trends keeps growing.
The Sleepy Girl Mocktail, blending magnesium, tart cherry juice and soda water, is the trend's poster drink. It is marketed online as a natural way to wind down and blunt stress hormones before bed.
The clinical evidence is more restrained than the hype. Magnesium may bring a modest improvement to sleep quality, but researchers say more studies are needed. That gap between hype and proof matters.
A 2023 review in Biological Trace Element Research found statistically significant effects on some measures of subjective sleep quality among adults with sleep disturbances. Support for magnesium easing stress or anxiety specifically remains weak.
Forms That Actually Work
Not every magnesium supplement does the same job, and the form matters as much as the dose. For relaxation, UCLA Health dietitian Elika Imandel recommends magnesium glycinate, saying it is gentler on the stomach.
She advises against magnesium oxide and citrate for relaxation, as both may cause diarrhoea and stomach pain. Advanced Supplements also markets magnesium malate for energy and magnesium threonate for cognitive function.
That range undercuts TikTok's one-size-fits-all framing. Evidence suggests that different forms may be suited to different purposes, not a single cure-all.

Deficiency Signs People Miss
Dr Zhaoping Li, director of UCLA's Center for Human Nutrition, says magnesium is crucial for muscle relaxation, neurotransmitter activity and essential cell functions. Most of it is stored in the bones. That role makes the nutrient hard to ignore.
Common signs people overlook include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fatigue and unexplained weakness. More severe deficiency can bring numbness, tingling and muscle cramps.
Those symptoms are often mistaken for stress or poor sleep rather than a nutrient shortfall. According to Li, though, outright deficiency is uncommon in people who are otherwise healthy.
Fewer than half of Americans meet their recommended magnesium intake from food, the USDA reports. But low intake is not the same as confirmed deficiency.
Too Much Can Be Risky
More magnesium is not automatically better, and excessive doses can be dangerous for people with kidney impairment, experts warn. Magnesium citrate is also used medically before colonoscopies to relieve constipation.
That medical use is why experts warn against copying viral videos that suggest drinking a full bottle for sleep or stress relief. The dose matters as much as the form.
Imandel says the Sleepy Girl Mocktail may help, but only alongside proper sleep hygiene. Anyone with ongoing sleep or stress problems should see a doctor.
TikTok has turned magnesium into shorthand for sleep and stress relief, but doctors are more measured. The nutrient is genuinely important, the right form matters, and the signs of falling short are easy to miss.
