Popular Workout Powder Recalled Over Illegal Amphetamine Compound Linked to Heart Attack Risks

A nationwide recall has been launched for a pre-workout powder after US regulators found that it contained an undeclared amphetamine derivative associated with potentially serious cardiovascular risks.
Routine testing by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) discovered 1,3-Dimethylamylamine (DMAA) inside one lot of RAPTURE Pre-workout powder manufactured by Texas-based Leader Formulas, LLC.
DMAA is a synthetic stimulant that narrows blood vessels and arteries, forcing the cardiovascular system to work under dangerous strain.
Regulators warn that consuming the prohibited substance can trigger sharp spikes in blood pressure, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and heart attacks.
Dangers of Banned DMAA
DMAA was briefly approved decades ago as a nasal decongestant spray, but it has no recognised medical use today.
The FDA has warned for more than a decade that marketing dietary supplements containing DMAA violates federal law.
Despite marketing claims that label DMAA as a 'natural' botanical ingredient, federal health officials confirmed there is no reliable evidence that the compound exists in plants.
Manufacturers often hide the illicit stimulant behind alternative chemical or botanical names on product labels. The FDA lists alternative names for DMAA, including 1,3-DMAA, dimethylamylamine, methylhexanamine, geranamine and 4-methyl-2-hexanamine. Some products may also list geranium extract or *Pelargonium graveolens* extract, which can indicate the presence of DMAA.
Identifying the Recalled Supplement Lots
The affected products were distributed nationwide to retail stores and sold online between 29 January 2025 and 25 May 2026.
The supplement is packaged in 450g round plastic containers featuring red and black lettering, a rhinoceros print seal on the lid, and lot number 260327-4.
The voluntary recall covers three flavours, specifically Rainbow Twist under UPC 710154236506, Electric Lemonade under UPC 710143 236513, and Berry Mojito under UPC 710154236544.
Leader Formulas stated that it has received no reports of illnesses or adverse events linked to the recalled powder so far.
What to Do if Symptoms Happen
Consumers who possess the recalled supplement should stop using it immediately and return it to the point of purchase for a full refund.
Anyone who experiences adverse effects after consuming the powder should contact their doctor or primary healthcare provider without delay.
DMAA can also cause irregular heartbeats and has been associated with seizures and other neurological and psychological conditions. Anyone experiencing adverse effects should seek advice from a healthcare professional promptly.
Users must also watch for serious neurological symptoms, including unexpected seizures, severe panic, and intense anxiety.
Where to Report Adverse Reactions and Defective Products
Consumers and healthcare providers can report adverse health events or product defects directly to the FDA MedWatch programme.
Reports can be submitted online via the FDA Safety Reporting Portal or the MedWatch online form at www.fda.gov/medwatch/report.htm.
Those reporting by telephone, regular mail, or fax can request documentation by calling 1-800-332-1088, send submissions via fax to 1-800-FDA-0178, or download forms at www.fda.gov/MedWatch/getforms.htm.
Consumers with questions for the manufacturer can contact Leader Formulas directly by email at [email protected] or by phone at 832-855-7562 on weekdays between 9:00am and 5:00pm CT.
In July, a powdered egg substitute was recalled nationwide because it may contain egg. The action was triggered after a consumer reported an allergic reaction.
