'Heartbreaking Tragedy': Mother Arrested After 8-Month-Old Infant Drowns in Unattended Bathtub

A 30-year-old mother has been arrested in Sterling, Virginia, following the fatal drowning of her eight-month-old infant.
Deputies from the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office took Rosellena Pisani into custody on Tuesday, 27 October 2026. Investigators allege that the infant was left unattended in a bathtub with running water.
Emergency responders originally answered a call on 10 September 2026 to assist fire and rescue teams with an unresponsive infant.
Loudoun County Sheriff Details Bathtub Drowning and Homicide Charges
Authorities charged Pisani with homicide, two counts of child abuse, and three counts of child endangerment following an extensive inquiry.
Sheriff's deputies disclosed that three children, ranging in age from eight months to eight years old, were inside the residence.
Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman described the incident as a severe failure of parental responsibility.
'This is a heartbreaking case involving the death of a helpless infant and circumstances that no children should ever have to endure', Sheriff Chapman stated. 'Parents and caregivers have a fundamental responsibility to protect the children in their care.'
Sheriff Chapman added that investigators worked diligently to pursue the facts while seeking justice for the community's most vulnerable members.
The case remains an active investigation, and officials have requested anyone with relevant information to contact Detective Franks at (703) 777-1021.
High-Profile Maternal Neglect Cases Highlight Nationwide Child Safety Crisis
The Virginia arrest follows several recent high-profile maternal neglect cases across the United States.
In September 2026, police arrested 29-year-old Nathalie Belizaire in North Miami Beach, Florida, for leaving four young children unsupervised. Authorities revealed Belizaire departed on a Bahamas cruise aboard the Carnival Conquest, leaving a two-month-old infant unattended for three days.
Officers forced entry into the apartment after the children's father raised alarms, discovering the distressed youngsters hiding inside a bathroom. Belizaire was charged with four counts of child neglect while the children entered foster care.
Similarly, an Ohio court previously sentenced Kristel Candelario to life in prison without parole for aggravated murder and child endangerment. Candelario left her 16-month-old toddler alone in a playpen for 10 days while taking a holiday in Detroit and Puerto Rico.
Medical examiners concluded the toddler died from severe dehydration and starvation before her mother returned home.
Clinical Research Links Maternal Trauma and Neurobiology to Severe Neglect
Public health researchers have examined how neurobiology, maternal attachment patterns and psychological trauma may influence caregiving behaviour and the risk of child maltreatment.
A 2011 review published in the Journal of Neuroendocrinology examined the biological systems involved in maternal caregiving behaviour, drawing on findings from animal and human studies. The review discussed research linking insecure or dismissing adult attachment patterns with differences in oxytocin responses and activity in dopamine-related brain reward pathways.
The review discussed research suggesting that mothers with insecure or dismissing attachment patterns may show reduced activation in certain brain reward pathways when viewing their infants' faces, alongside lower oxytocin responses during mother-infant interactions.
Furthermore, a 2013 study published in JAMA Pediatrics examined associations between maternal post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and child maltreatment.
Researchers found that mothers with both PTSD and depression reported higher levels of physical and psychological aggression towards their children. Greater maternal depression severity was independently associated with physical assault and neglect.
The study found that children of mothers with PTSD, either alone or alongside depression, had experienced more traumatic events than children of mothers with depression alone or neither condition.
