A British visitor's first trip around an American Walmart has spread online after he compared a nearly foot-long roll of meat with his arm.

In a video posted by his American partner, Tayla Jackson, he left asking: 'Successful trip? The hell do you guys eat?' By early September 2026, the clip had drawn more than 540,000 views and nearly 50,000 likes.

British Shopper Stunned by Walmart Food Portions

He was particularly stunned by a meat roll labelled at 160 ounces — about 4.5kg — and questioned what meal could possibly require that much, was also surprised by the size of a pizza and treated bagged cereal as a novelty.

The couple began at trolleys that need no pound coin. Jackson later described him as overstimulated as they passed televisions on open display.

The reaction is hardly a surprise to anyone comparing a Tesco shop with a Supercenter run, yet the clip has again put Walmart food portions under a British microscope.

Why American Pack Sizes Dwarf a British Weekly Shop

The gap is real, though not identical in every aisle.

US grocery is built around family packs, warehouse-style bags and bulk meat, while many British lines still assume a smaller household shop and freezer. Figures drawn from FAO food balance sheets for 2023 put food supply at 3,947 kcal per person a day in the United States against 3,435 kcal in the United Kingdom.

That is availability, not intake. The UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey for 2019 to 2023 recorded mean intakes of 1,883 kcal a day for men aged 19 to 64 and 1,491 kcal for women, with under-reporting put at about 30 per cent.

Restaurant menus are closer. An analysis of large-chain items in 2018 found adult dishes in the United States averaged 45.6 kcal more than comparable UK plates, and listed portion weights were often missing.

Fast-food boxes still run larger in America, where McDonald's US offers a 40-piece Chicken McNuggets option, while McDonald's UK currently lists a 20-piece ShareBox.

US portion sizes began increasing in the 1970s and rose sharply in the 1980s, with researchers pointing to value pricing, marketing and wider changes in the food-service industry as contributing factors

Official figures also show a substantial obesity burden in both countries: 40.3 per cent among US adults aged 20 and over in August 2021–August 2023, compared with 26.5 per cent among adults aged 18 and over in England in 2023–24. The figures come from different surveys and are not perfectly comparable.

Supercentres Built for One Big Stock-up

Walmart's filing for the year to 31 January 2026 lists 3,566 US Supercenters averaging 178,000 sq ft. That makes a typical Walmart Supercenter substantially larger than many conventional UK supermarkets.

Britons often assume Walmart is simply Asda with different signs. Walmart owned Asda from 1999 and sold most of the chain in a £6.8 billion ($9.2 billion) deal completed in 2021, keeping a minority stake.

The same shelves that startle first-time British visitors also stock smaller bags and standard packs. What changes at the door is the default size on the gondola, and how ordinary that larger scale now looks to regulars filling a trolley.
