'Doctors and Nurses' Reveal the Everyday Habits They Say Are 'Destroying' People's Health by 40

High blood pressure, severe sleep apnoea and chronic sleep loss are among the health problems Reddit users say can quietly catch up with people in their 40s.
One commenter described a sleep test showing about 200 breathing interruptions an hour. Another said repeated attempts to use a CPAP machine had lasted less than an hour.
The discussion began on Reddit after a question asking doctors and nurses about everyday habits that harm people's health by their 40s. It drew thousands of votes and hundreds of comments, with several responses describing problems that can develop quietly for years.
The accounts are anecdotal, and Reddit does not independently verify users' medical credentials. However, some concerns raised overlap with established NHS and public health guidance.
Silent Sleep Problems
Sleep apnoea was among the most striking concerns. The commenter with about 200 breathing interruptions an hour said they were constantly on the verge of falling asleep and had struggled to tolerate CPAP.
Another commenter said CPAP transformed their sleep after eight months.
The NHS says sleep apnoea can cause breathing to stop and start, gasping or choking during sleep, loud snoring and excessive daytime tiredness. Untreated, it can raise the risk of high blood pressure, stroke, type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
Anyone who suspects sleep apnoea should speak to a GP. People diagnosed may also need to tell the DVLA and should not drive if excessive sleepiness is affecting them until symptoms are controlled.
The NHS says CPAP is most effective when used every night. People who struggle with the equipment should speak to their doctor or sleep team.
Too little sleep was another highly upvoted concern. One user described working shifts lasting 28 hours or more, despite knowing repeated sleep loss could harm their health.
Moving More, Managing Stress
Sedentary lifestyles prompted concern, particularly among desk workers and people working from home. UK chief medical officers recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity a week for adults.
Stress was another recurring theme. Commenters described prolonged pressure and unhealthy coping methods. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says stress can affect sleep, appetite and energy, and may affect physical and mental health.
Untreated high blood pressure was also flagged. The NHS says it usually has no symptoms, meaning a person can have it without knowing. Over time, uncontrolled high blood pressure increases the risk of serious cardiovascular problems.
Adults aged 40 and over in England can receive a free blood pressure check at participating pharmacies if they meet NHS service criteria. People aged 40 to 74 may also be offered an NHS Health Check every five years.
Bedtime Habits Under Scrutiny
Stephen Brewer, medical director at Canyon Ranch Tucson, has warned about habits that can undermine sleep. He said some people use alcohol to fall asleep, only to experience more alertness later in the night.
Alcohol can disrupt sleep quality, making the second half of the night more fragmented. Brewer also said poor sleep can increase appetite the following day.
Brewer has also discussed eating large, energy-dense meals close to bedtime. Any reported increase in obesity risk should be described as an association, not proof that late eating directly causes obesity.
The Reddit discussion does not prove that any one habit will damage everyone by middle age. But some health problems can build quietly while people feel they are simply part of everyday life.
Persistent snoring, daytime sleepiness, prolonged inactivity and untreated high blood pressure should not be dismissed as the price of getting older. They can be reasons to seek medical advice.
