Getting more sleep is rarely the first thing people think about when trying to lose weight. Diet and exercise usually take centre stage. But researchers are increasingly examining whether sleep health could also influence how successfully people lose excess weight.

A 2026 systematic review published in Obesity Reviews examined 30 studies involving 10,944 adults from 13 countries who were participating in weight-loss interventions.

The researchers found that the relationship between sleep and weight loss was complex, but some aspects of better sleep appeared to be linked with better outcomes.

The findings suggest that sleep quality may matter as much as, or potentially more than, simply counting hours in bed.

How Does Sleep Affect Weight?

Brown University Health notes that getting fewer than seven hours of sleep has been associated with weight changes and may contribute to weight gain by increasing food intake or reducing energy expenditure.

Poor sleep can also increase late-night snacking and portion sizes, while fatigue may reduce motivation to exercise.

Hormones involved in appetite regulation may also be affected. Insufficient sleep can alter leptin and ghrelin levels, which help regulate feelings of fullness and hunger. Sleep loss may therefore make it harder to resist calorie-dense foods or control portions.

There is another potential problem: tiredness can reduce the amount of energy people expend during the day. Someone who is exhausted may be less likely to exercise and may spend more time being sedentary.

Does Sleeping Longer Mean You Will Lose More Weight?

More sleep may seem like an obvious strategy for supporting weight loss, but the evidence is more nuanced. The new review found that sleep duration had inconsistent associations with weight-loss outcomes.

In other words, simply increasing the number of hours spent asleep did not consistently translate into greater weight loss across the studies examined. Instead, the researchers found more promising evidence for other aspects of sleep health.

Greater sleep satisfaction and higher sleep efficiency, which refers to the proportion of time in bed actually spent sleeping, were associated with better weight-loss outcomes in around half of the relevant studies.

Meanwhile, experimental studies suggested that restricting sleep could reduce fat loss during behavioural weight-loss programmes. The researchers stressed that evidence around sleep regularity, timing, and daytime alertness remains limited.

Why Could Poor Sleep Make Weight Loss Harder?

One explanation is that sleep affects both eating behaviour and energy balance. When people are tired, they may have stronger appetites, eat more frequently, or choose foods higher in calories, fat, and carbohydrates. Poor sleep may also affect brain regions involved in decision-making and self-control, potentially making healthy choices more difficult.

Excess weight can increase the risk of sleep problems, including obstructive sleep apnoea, insomnia, and other conditions that interfere with restful sleep. This can create a cycle in which poor sleep makes weight management harder, while excess weight contributes to poorer sleep.

So, Can Better Sleep Help You Lose Weight?

The authors of the 2026 review concluded that sleep satisfaction and sleep efficiency may support weight loss, whereas sleep restriction could impair fat loss. However, they also stressed that the available evidence remains mixed and that more high-quality experimental research is needed to determine whether improving sleep directly leads to better weight-loss outcomes.

For people trying to lose weight, improving sleep is therefore best considered part of a broader strategy that includes a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and appropriate medical care where needed.

Simple sleep habits can help. Keeping a consistent sleep schedule, limiting caffeine and alcohol before bed, creating a cool, dark, and quiet bedroom, and avoiding stimulating screens before sleep may support better rest.
