Former porn star Lindsay Brooke has revealed she survived a life-threatening drug overdose before permanently exiting the entertainment industry.

Brooke, who spent 17 years in adult film production, opened up about her departure during an unfiltered Q&A on social platform Threads.

The mother of three disclosed that severe substance abuse and escalating psychological distress pushed her to the brink of death in 2024.

Porn Star Shares Near-Death Experience

Brooke explained that the crisis occurred inside a hotel room as she prepared to sign yet another porn video contract.

After ingesting a lethal dose of pills, she survived what she describes as a definitive wake-up call to leave the business.

'I should be dead. That's not drama. That's pharmacology,' Brooke wrote, confirming she has maintained complete sobriety since that day.

'I got out because I couldn't get high enough to sign another deal,' she added. 'I begged God on that hotel room floor. Take me out or take me over.'

On-Set Dissociation and Chemical Coping Mechanisms

Responding to social media inquiries about her routine on set, Brooke admitted to turning to narcotics simply to complete scheduled shoots.

She said prescription drugs helped numb her emotions on set, allowing her to disconnect completely while filming.

'I am dissociating. I am taking narcotics. I am leaving myself behind and stepping into a role," Brooke stated. "I used them not to feel while on set and used them to feel while at home.'

Brooke revealed she earned roughly $1,500 (£1,122.99) per scene, describing the compensation as insufficient for the physical and mental toll.

Financial pressure and professional stigma repeatedly undermined her efforts to retire after the birth of each of her three children.

Studies Reveal Severe Health Risks for Adult Film Stars

Brooke's personal account mirrors peer-reviewed research tracking the hidden occupational hazards of adult film work.

A 2008 study revealed that female performers face widespread physical, psychological, and social risks on set.

Researchers identified occupational health risks among adult film performers, including physical trauma, substance abuse and mental health problems. The study was based on in-depth interviews with 18 female and 10 male performers, alongside two industry informants, rather than a representative survey of the industry.

A 2022 systematic review noted a severe lack of medical data on performers, largely due to pervasive social stigma. The review found that the limited available research suggested poorer mental health and a higher prevalence of mental disorders in some performer groups, although the overall evidence remained inconclusive. The authors called for further research to identify which performers may be most vulnerable and what factors contribute to psychological distress.

How Regular Porn Viewing Affects the Brain

Around 40 million Americans visit adult websites regularly, with more than 28,000 users streaming explicit content every second.

Brooke warned that porn viewers frequently confuse staged scenes with genuine human intimacy. 'The entire industry is built off illusions; women don't actually want men to do everything we portray in the movies,' she wrote.

A 2014 study published in JAMA Psychiatry found an association between greater pornography consumption and lower grey matter volume in a region of the brain's striatum among 64 men. Researchers also observed associations with activity in reward-related brain regions. However, the study could not establish whether frequent viewing caused these differences or whether pre-existing brain characteristics influenced viewing habits.

Now sober, Brooke urged the public to consider the personal toll behind adult entertainment.
