Kim Kardashian has reflected on the irony of becoming a patient at the UCLA Robert G. Kardashian Center for Esophageal Health, a facility she helped establish in memory of her father. The reality television star was diagnosed with esophagitis and returned to the centre for treatment and further examinations, bringing a deeply personal connection to her family's efforts to raise awareness of oesophageal disease.

The episode of The Kardashians shown on 5 November follows Kardashian as she attends the centre with her mother, Kris Jenner, for a follow-up endoscopy. The appointment followed an earlier examination that identified irregularities in her oesophagus.

One doctor recommended surgery to remove the affected tissue, but Kardashian sought a second opinion at UCLA, where a specialist suggested trying medication for eight weeks before repeating the examination.

A Family Legacy Becomes Personal

Kardashian described the coincidence in a confessional on the programme, saying: 'The irony of this all — the fact that I helped to put together this building, never knowing that I would need it.' UCLA and the Kardashian family established the Robert G. Kardashian Center for Esophageal Health in 2019 in memory of Robert Kardashian, who died from oesophageal cancer in 2003. He was 59.

Kim, Kourtney and Khloé Kardashian helped establish the facility in their father's memory, while the family committed to fundraising to support its work. UCLA said it was designed to bring together specialists in gastroenterology, surgery, oncology, radiology, pathology and other disciplines, alongside research and education. The centre treats a range of oesophageal conditions, not cancer alone, including reflux and swallowing disorders.

When the centre was launched, Kim Kardashian West shared her hopes for its impact on X. 'My wish is that other families can have more information and we can also focus on health and prevention,' she wrote in April 2019. The sisters attended a UCLA event for its fifth anniversary in 2024.

Treatment Before Surgery

The latest episode shows Kardashian following the medication plan despite its inconvenient timing. She said the medicine had to be taken up to 25 minutes before eating. At the follow-up, doctors were checking whether the medication had improved the inflammation and whether the irregularities remained, potentially requiring a procedure to remove the affected tissue.

Kardashian said she was hopeful but understood that the next step could depend on the results. If the irregularities remained, she said doctors might need to remove a piece of tissue from her oesophagus. She said she did not want surgery but would do what was necessary. Her mother was anxious, fearing a repeat of her father's rapid decline.

Esophagitis is inflammation of the lining of the oesophagus and is distinct from oesophageal cancer. It can have several causes, including acid reflux, certain medicines and infection. Kardashian's diagnosis does not mean she has cancer.

A Centre Built To Help Patients

UCLA established the centre to improve care for people with oesophageal and motility disorders, which can include reflux and swallowing problems as well as cancer. It brings clinicians and researchers together to improve diagnosis and treatment. The university marked five years of the programme in April 2024.

For Kardashian, the visit has given the centre's mission an unexpected personal dimension. A project conceived after her father's death has become part of her own medical care, as she waits to learn whether medication has resolved the problem or further treatment will be needed.
