Marvel star Paul Bettany has revealed how an intense acting performance left him with a bloodshot eye for two weeks after he burst approximately 10 blood vessels while filming his latest superhero series. The 55-year-old British actor recalled the unusual injury during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, joking that it taught him an important lesson about keeping his performances in check.

Bettany, who plays the android Vision in Marvel's VisionQuest, said the incident happened while filming a scene in which his character was pretending to have a device attached to his head that was affecting his brain.

'So, I was pretending to have a device on my head that is doing something to my brain, and I was just wildly overacting,' he told host Jimmy Kimmel during the 29 October appearance.

'And I blew out about 10 blood vessels in my eye,' he added, describing the experience as 'a lesson in less is more'.

Kimmel subsequently showed the audience a photograph of Bettany's visibly bloodshot left eye, prompting surprised reactions. The actor said the redness lasted for approximately two weeks, during which the production team had to digitally remove the injury from footage.

'I think it must have cost production so much to take it out because we shot the whole [thing],' Bettany joked.

What Happens When Blood Vessels Burst in the Eye?

A burst blood vessel can cause a striking red patch on the white part of the eye. One possible explanation is a subconjunctival haemorrhage, which occurs when a small blood vessel beneath the conjunctiva, the transparent membrane covering the white of the eye, breaks and allows blood to collect underneath.

Although the appearance can be alarming, this type of bleeding is generally harmless when it occurs without other symptoms. It typically does not affect vision and often clears without treatment over one to two weeks, although some cases take longer.

Several factors can contribute to a subconjunctival haemorrhage, including forceful coughing, sneezing, vomiting, eye rubbing and physical strain. High blood pressure, eye injuries and certain blood-thinning medications may also increase the likelihood of bleeding.

However, Bettany has not disclosed a medical diagnosis, and it would be premature to conclude that his injury was a subconjunctival haemorrhage based solely on his description.

When Should a Bloodshot Eye Cause Concern?

While some cases resolve naturally, a red eye should not automatically be dismissed as a minor problem. The NHS advises seeking urgent medical attention if redness is accompanied by significant pain, changes in vision or sensitivity to light.

A red eye following an injury also requires prompt assessment, particularly if vision is affected. Persistent or recurrent red patches may warrant an appointment with a GP or optician to investigate possible underlying causes.

People with an otherwise painless red eye and no vision changes may not need emergency treatment, but should seek professional advice if they are concerned or symptoms do not improve.

For Bettany, the experience of playing an android capable of extraordinary feats has come with a reminder of very human physical limitations. As his eye injury demonstrated, even a performance without elaborate stunts can have unexpected consequences.
