Spanish football is mourning the death of Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, who died aged 30 after suffering cardiac arrest following a collision with an opposing goalkeeper during a second-division match. The forward, who became a father last year, died in hospital on Tuesday, 3 November, after sustaining serious injuries during Monday's game against FC Andorra.

The incident occurred in the closing minutes of the match at Tenerife's Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López, with both teams level at 2-2. De Miguel was chasing a long ball towards the middle of the pitch when Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono rushed out of his area to challenge for possession.

Owono's knee struck the Tenerife forward in the chest, knocking both players to the ground. De Miguel collapsed and remained motionless as footballers from both sides immediately called for medical assistance.

Medical personnel rushed onto the pitch to treat the 30-year-old, while several players appeared visibly distressed. He was subsequently taken by ambulance to Hospital Universitario de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Owono was shown a straight red card following the collision, and the match was abandoned after the medical emergency. The score remained 2-2.

Jesús de Miguel's Condition Deteriorated in Hospital

Tenerife initially described De Miguel's condition as stable, despite the severity of his injuries. However, the club later confirmed that his neurological condition had deteriorated while he remained in intensive care.

The forward had suffered cardiac arrest following the collision and required emergency medical attention. Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly stops pumping blood effectively around the body, making it a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate treatment.

Despite efforts to save him, De Miguel died at approximately 8am local time on Tuesday, according to the club's announcement.

'Broken with pain, with a lump in our throat and unable to believe that this is true, from CD Tenerife we announce the tragic passing of Jesús de Miguel Alameda this Tuesday, 3 November 2026, at 8:00 am,' the club said in a statement.

Tenerife added that it stood alongside the striker's devastated family, loved ones and supporters, while his family requested privacy during the difficult period.

Football Clubs Pay Tribute as Police Open Investigation

The news prompted an outpouring of condolences from across Spanish football. Andorra expressed its 'most sincere condolences' to De Miguel's family, teammates and Tenerife, while Barcelona described his death as tragic and offered support to those close to him.

Former Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué, who is Andorra's majority shareholder, also paid tribute, writing: 'I am so deeply sorry. Rest in peace, Jesús.'

Spanish police have opened proceedings following the footballer's death, with authorities investigating possible involuntary manslaughter. The opening of an inquiry is a procedural step following a death considered non-natural and does not establish criminal responsibility.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) postponed all matches scheduled for Tuesday, including Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina fixtures, as a mark of respect. UEFA also announced that moments of silence would be observed before European matches.

A Young Career Cut Short

Born in Madrid, De Miguel began his football career in 2015 with Leganés B before representing several Spanish clubs, including Fuenlabrada, Navalcarnero, Unionistas de Salamanca and Castellón.

He joined Tenerife in 2025 after helping Castellón secure promotion to Spain's second division in 2024. He scored 11 goals during the 2025–26 season.

Beyond football, De Miguel welcomed his daughter, Carla, in 2025. His death has therefore left his family, teammates and supporters grieving the loss of a young player whose career and life were cut short.

As tributes continue to emerge, Tenerife has asked the public to respect the family's privacy as they come to terms with the tragedy.
