Erin Benavides, a Texas prosecutor who advocated for vulnerable children, has died in an apparent suicide at 54. Her former boss, District Attorney Christina Mitchell, said she brought 'joy, laughter, and mirth' to the office.

Benavides was found dead at a Port Aransas home on 14 October, after a friend of her husband reportedly received an alarming text from her. Her death is a stark reminder that visible success can hide private suffering.

Study Links Isolation to Distress

Researchers studied 200 people in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, Pakistan, to examine how infidelity relates to stress, anxiety and depression. Among married couples, it was linked with all three, with correlations from 0.34 to 0.40.

They concluded that divorced people who experienced infidelity were more likely to develop psychological problems than married couples. Correlations among divorced participants were not statistically significant, however.

Rates of depression, anxiety and stress were higher in women than men, the study found. The sample came from a few Pakistani cities, so the findings may not apply to everyone.

The authors described loneliness as a major cause of stress, which can lead to psychological distress. They said the work may help psychologists address the consequences of infidelity and help clinicians act before separation leads to depression.

Research by Glass and Wright in 1992, cited in the study, found that 38 per cent of women experienced depression within one month of learning of a partner's infidelity. Many had no previous history of depression.

Another cited study, by Whisman and colleagues in 1997, found that 75 per cent of people who felt isolated believed it was a result of depressive symptoms. Loneliness and depression therefore sit close together in the research.

The study does not look at any individual case or examine suicide, so it offers only general context. Nothing in the available information links its findings to Benavides, who denied an affair.

Details Behind the Tragedy

The Port Aransas Police Department said officers responded to a welfare concern at about 7.34pm and found her deceased inside the residence. The Nueces County Medical Examiner's Office is determining the official cause and manner of death.

No foul play is suspected, though the investigation remains active and ongoing. She appeared to be living alone and was unemployed, and journals in the home showed she was looking for a new job.

Benavides resigned in August 2026 as an assistant district attorney in Texas' 38th Judicial District, a post she held from January 2023. The available information does not explain why she died.

She also led the Youth Center of Texas from 2020 to 2022 and advocated for foster children. Yolanda Valenzuela of Kym's Angels Foundation recalled her work with the Bexar County Child Welfare Board, including a Christmas fundraiser.

Benavides was previously married to former San Antonio Spurs player Brent Barry, who divorced her in 2010, alleging an emotional affair with NBA star Tony Parker. She denied it, and Parker reportedly denied any physical relationship.

Why Reaching Out Matters

Kate London, who offers coaching to women in affair relationships, says people facing dark and difficult moments do not have to go through them alone. She encourages anyone struggling to reach out for support.

She also says shame and isolation can make it harder to seek support, and lists anxiety, low self-esteem and depression among common effects. Her comments are general and do not refer to Benavides.

The events of 14 October began with an alarming text message, which led to a call to police. It is a reminder that reaching out to someone who seems withdrawn or overwhelmed can matter.
