Man Allegedly Breaks Wife's Ribs After Hugging Her Too Hard: Could It Happen to You?

A woman in Jiangsu, China, suffered five fractured ribs and a hairline crack in a sixth after her husband hugged her from behind. Doctors later diagnosed her with severe osteoporosis.
The incident happened on 18 October, after she told her husband, surnamed Wang, that she felt cold. He reportedly lifted her slightly during the embrace and heard a cracking sound.
Wang said he used normal pressure and did not intend to hurt her. The couple sought medical attention the following morning, when a chest CT scan confirmed the fractures.
How Osteoporosis Weakens Bones
Doctors did not recommend surgery. She was discharged with medication, pain-relief patches and instructions to rest.
Wang said his wife weighed between 45 and 50 kilogrammes and frequently followed strict diets, often skipping dinner. She also drank coffee daily and rarely went outdoors, usually covering her skin.
These details do not establish what caused her osteoporosis. Limited sunlight exposure can reduce vitamin D production. The vitamin helps the body absorb calcium and supports bone health.
The Cleveland Clinic describes osteoporosis as a disease that weakens bones and makes them more likely to fracture. It can remain undetected until a fracture occurs.
Yan Yanxiang, an associate chief orthopaedic physician at Wuhan Asia Heart General Hospital, said rib fractures caused by a hug are uncommon in younger people. He linked the risk to lifestyle and dietary habits.
What the Rib Fracture Study Found
A study involving 2,076 patients with blunt chest trauma found that osteoporosis was associated with higher rib fracture rates. It was also linked to a greater likelihood of fractures in ribs four to seven.
Both osteoporosis and osteopenia were associated with more fractured ribs and fracture sites. The conditions were also linked to a higher likelihood of fractures in ribs one to three and flail chest.
The findings do not show that ordinary hugs commonly cause rib fractures. All participants had experienced blunt chest trauma, and researchers examined its relationship with bone mineral density.
Researchers described reduced bone mineral density as a silent condition, noting that patients often had not undergone screening before sustaining fractures. They said CT scans combined with artificial intelligence could help identify people with low bone density.
Warning Signs and Recovery
A broken rib can damage nearby blood vessels, the lungs or other organs. Fractures in several adjacent ribs can cause flail chest, a serious condition that makes breathing difficult.
Gerald Megna, MD, a sports medicine physician at Harbin Clinic Family Medicine Rome, part of Atrium Health, said osteoporosis, metastatic cancer and COPD can increase the risk of rib injuries. He also highlighted the importance of recognising warning signs and keeping screenings up to date.
Difficulty breathing, rapid breathing, severe pain, a racing heart or feeling faint are reasons to seek urgent medical assessment. Pain that prevents deep breathing can increase the risk of pneumonia.
Most broken ribs heal on their own in about six weeks, although recovery can take 12 weeks or longer. Good pain control helps people breathe deeply and lowers the risk of lung complications.
Bruised or broken ribs usually improve within two to six weeks. Medical attention is recommended if pain has not improved after a few weeks or a person coughs up yellow or green mucus.
Protecting Bone Health
Getting enough calcium and vitamin D helps keep bones strong. Adults generally need 1,000 to 1,200 milligrams of calcium daily, depending on their age and sex. Most adults up to age 70 need 600 international units of vitamin D daily, while those older than 70 need 800 IU, according to the National Institutes of Health.
The woman is reportedly recovering at home, spending more time outdoors and getting enough calcium. Her diagnosis highlights how reduced bone density can leave people vulnerable to fractures.
Megna's advice was direct: 'When in doubt, get evaluated.' He urged patients not to ignore warning signs.
