Red light therapy masks have become one of the beauty world's most talked-about gadgets, with celebrities, influencers and skincare enthusiasts turning to glowing LED devices for smoother, clearer and younger-looking skin.

The technology is not entirely new. Known medically as photobiomodulation, red light therapy uses red or near-infrared wavelengths to interact with cells and may influence inflammation, healing, and collagen production.

Dermatologists have used light-based treatments for years, although professional devices are generally more powerful than those sold for home use.

What Can Red Light Therapy Actually Do?

Research suggests red-light devices may provide some benefits for skin ageing, including improvements in fine lines, redness, rough texture and discolouration. However, dermatologists stress that the results are unlikely to resemble the dramatic transformations sometimes shown on social media.

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) notes that studies have found anything from subtle to noticeable improvements, but comparing results is difficult because researchers use different devices, treatment schedules, and light intensities. More research is also needed to determine the optimal dose and frequency for home use.

There is stronger evidence for LED therapy in some forms of acne. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis found that at-home red and/or blue LED devices were associated with reductions of about 45% in inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne lesions compared with controls. Improvements were generally seen after four to 12 weeks.

That does not mean every mask will deliver the same results.

Why the Device Matters

One of the biggest problems for consumers is that 'red light therapy' describes a broad category of devices rather than one standardised treatment.

Masks can differ in wavelength, intensity, treatment time, and how evenly light reaches the skin. A device that looks impressive may not necessarily deliver the same dose used in a clinical study.

The AAD also warns that an FDA-cleared device should not automatically be interpreted as highly effective. Clearance indicates that a device meets the relevant regulatory requirements for marketing and is considered low risk, but it does not guarantee dramatic results.

Are Red Light Masks Safe?

For most people, short-term use appears to have a relatively good safety profile. Unlike ultraviolet light, red light has not been shown to cause skin cancer, according to the AAD. Reported side effects are generally mild and can include temporary irritation or discomfort.

However, red light therapy is not suitable for everyone. People with photosensitive conditions or those taking medicines that increase light sensitivity may need to avoid the treatment or seek medical advice first.

The AAD also recommends that people with darker skin tones speak with a dermatologist before using an at-home device because visible light may increase the risk of hyperpigmentation in more sensitive skin.
